Hemorrhoid Surgery – Is It the Right Option?

Surgery as a treatment for hemorrhoids may become necessary when the hemorrhoids become larger than normal and they don’t go away when applying the more typical, less invasive treatments. If there is a lot of bleeding, surgery can also become necessary.

The most common hemorrhoid treatment surgery is called a hemorrhoidectomy. A doctor makes small incisions around the anus that are done to cut away the hemorrhoids. The procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis. The patient can either be given a general anesthetic so that he or she is asleep during the procedure or a local anesthetic, numbing the area to be operated on.

Surgery on external hemorrhoids normally does relieve the pain, bleeding, and swelling that hemorrhoids cause. However, since the incisions are in a very sensitive area of the body and may need stitches, there can be a fair amount of tenderness and pain. It is also necessary to keep the area clean to avoid infection.

Another surgical procedure used to treat hemorrhoids is called PPH. This procedure is less invasive than a hemorrhoidectomy and is used when the hemorrhoids drop out of the anal canal. A device much like a stapler is used to reposition them and also to cut of their supply of blood. This causes the hemorrhoid to eventually die. This type of surgery has fewer complications; less plain, bleeding, and itching; and a faster recover time.

There are other minimally invasive procedures similar to this that also work, but the hemorrhoidectomy usually gives more long-term results.
